RECAP: “PRÊT-À-PORTER SF” 2011

This year’s “PRÊT-À-PORTER SF” 2011, with mass market in mind, was an amalgamation of global fashion, technology and sophistication.   Designers hailed from Ireland, The Middle East, South Africa, Thailand, China, Russia and the United States, which was a genuine representation of today’s global fashion.  Sustainable fashion and technology were also an apparent theme, with Carol Wang’s presentation of bamboo fabrics, Sonas Denim’s literal take on recycling of denims and the stylish integration of advanced materials and design with personal media technology by Alphyn Industries. Anya Tatarenko, Kajan Padraig  and LHC Couture with WorkPlayDate and Sasha Maksutenko jewelries, brought clean sophistication to the runway with beautifully fitted and elegant women’s ready to wear. Frankees Samad debuted her design with her personal modernizations of Islamic dress.

SFFAMA’s founder, Owen Geronimo, feels that San Francisco is now ready for a worldwide audience. “PRÊT-À-PORTER SF” 2011 is one of the many successful fashion events along, with Project San Francisco, The Beauty Expo, Fashion Feud, Fashion Mash-Up Workshops and San Francisco Fashion Week ™,  that SFFAMA has brought to fruition, which are all labors of love with strong community support.  One of SFFAMA’s main goals is to establish San Francisco as a global fashion destination and as a catalyst of fashion and technology convergence.  SFFAMA strongly believes in social good “to utilize fashion-to apply-to make impact” in our ongoing philanthropic efforts and mentorship program with our ‘Fashion4Good’ project.

SFFAMA would like to THANK the following:  Our committee hosts Charleston Pierce, Karri Ann Frerichs of Altitude Promotions, Jessica Schoefer of Fashion Network Association, Mika Uehara and Charles Belle of Lookaroo, Dino Ynostroza and Oliver Lorenz of Fordie Dinosaurs, Charmaine Adrina and Robert Nixon of SFFAMA and Kirill Elistratov.  Our beauty team of Tanera Daye, Atelier Emanuele and San Francisco Institute of Aesthetics and Cosmetology.  Our wonderful sponsors:  Luv.it Mobile App, Los Osuna Tequila, Trumer Pils, ModeWalk, Fashion Network Association, Cheat-A-Little Catering, Aveda, Jaya Production and SFStation. / CAROLE WANG

Carole Wang is a designer label with over 25 years of experience in the contemporary missy market. Carole Wang has proven in the past to provide the utmost style and elegance using Classic Velveen Knits, sold through specialty stores and major retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Nordstrum. Because of past health issues with her family and the abuse of our natural environment, there is nothing more important to Carole Wang than being able to look into the future and help preserve our earth for future generations. It is for this reason that Carole Wang has decided to go green by offering two all natural fiber lines – Carole Wang knits and Dragon by Carole Wang. For all Carole Wang Classic couture handloom knit customers, you can go green by replacing the traditional Velveen to 100% eco-friendly bamboo.

  • FRANKEES SAMAD

Frankees Samad is a new fashion designer from the Bay Area. She recently graduated from the University of California, Davis majoring in Fashion Design, with a minor in Textiles and Clothing, and Global International Studies. As an undergraduate, Frankees received the Presidential Undergraduate Fellowship Grant, a competitive scholarly grant to carry out her first fashion collection, which was based on Islamic Art and Architecture using digitally printed fabrics and structural designs. Frankees has also studied abroad and interned in London, England for a well known London based designer who she helped work on the costumes for the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2” movie.  She has also worked with a local San Francisco designer who she helped create unique knit and wool garments that were shown at World of Wearable Art.  She has also assisted another Bay Area designer with couture remodeling of vintage wedding gowns. She was also Publicity Coordinator for the Runway Designers Club which puts on 2 fashion shows each year. All of her experiences have prepared her to start her own collection of clothing.

/ KAJAN PADRAIG

Kajan Padraig started on December 4, 2009 by Kanjana (Cake) Carlos and Patrick Steber, who have built the company from the ground up. Our first collection was made up of knit T’s, dresses, and tunic style tops. Which became a highly successful collection, because of the quality of fabric, the cut of the designs and Kajan Padraig’s unique design elements.

We are both highly educated and trained in the design and construction of couture, made-to-measure clothing. This experience is what sets us apart from other designers. We see the subtle differences from woman to woman and know how to make beautiful clothing to make all women feel beautiful. The caliber of design has not gone unnoticed, and after just 6 months, Kajan Padraig was commissioned to design and fabricate two gowns for the San Francisco Opera Gala in September of 2010.

/ LAUREN HYDE CRAFFORD

Executive Designer and Owner Lauren Hyde Crafford, created LHC Couture as a collection of easy-to-wear styles that fit and flatter every body type. Lauren started her career with a degree in Merchandise Product Development from FIDM in Los Angeles. She then worked as a textile designer and color specialist for two well known design houses before starting her own collection. LHC Couture styles can be purchased online at www.lhccouture.com.

/ SONAS JEANS

Sonas Denim was founded by Gerry Kelly an Irish born festival enthusiast living in San Francisco since 2000. Gerry was born in Dublin, Ireland. At the young age of 20, he got an itch for travelling after spending a few weeks on holiday in Greece.  The following Summer, he returned to Greece where he sold t-shirts and jewelry on the beach to other fun loving travelers.  When the holiday season came to an end in Greece, he moved on to Turkey, Israel, Sinai and Egypt where he continued to buy clothing and jewelry to sell to fellow travelers to fund his own travelling.  His tastes in fashion were a hit!

After a few years on the road, Gerry went back home to Dublin to visit his family and to rest for a few months before setting out upon the world again.  He had, as they say, “the travel bug.”  He decided to continue his ongoing search of fun music festivals and good times.  He especially loved to meet passionate party people. He traveled constantly to different festivals and raves around the world, living his dream of partying and meeting new friends.

WorkPlayDate originated with the concept “exciting jewelry for beautiful people.” All of the jewelry in WorkPlayDate is handmade and completely original. Each piece is made freestyle and as a piece of art, combining raw materials, vintage items, new jewelry and old jewelry and deconstructing them to create superb new pieces. We are proud of the unique and eye-catching quality of all our jewelry.

Modewalk is a tale of Paris and Silicon Valley. Beatrice discovered the fascinating world of creativity and craftsmanship when she joined a study trip at Stanford to meet luxury designers in Paris. During her trip, the private studio visits and genuine stories told by designers swept her heart away. She came back wishing to share this experience with consumers worldwide.

Before attending Stanford, Henri founded two luxury brands in Paris, initially to support a flourishing designer. While growing his brands, Henri always wished to tell his unique stories to consumers. A creative idea presented itself when the two met and became friends at Stanford. Sharing a deep passion to connect designers with consumers, Beatrice and Henri combined Silicon Valley innovations with Parisian aesthetics to create the Modewalk dream.

Aveda, who partners with salon and spa professionals around the world, sees beauty as a craft, not as a product result. Aveda beauty professionals are unique in the industry for their pursuit of a higher art: helping make their clients not only look beautiful, but feel beautiful. This selfless quest to bring out the beauty in their client through genuine care, differs from beauty industry norms.

Empowered by its unique Mission, Aveda believes that authentic beauty is one that works in harmony with the greater web of life. It does not qualify as beauty if it hurts any of the diverse life forms that the best beauty artist of all, Nature, created. Authentic Beauty cares for the environment which we inherited from elders and will leave to generations that follow us. Beauty cares for the society in which we live, enhancing harmony in the way we live and interact with one another as human beings. In order to be Beauty, it also needs to be Good. Beauty is the result, but also the process followed in pursuing that result.
